Big Company Tries to Scare Little Guy Into Submission (same old story…)

Ron @ Statsaholic.com (formerly Alexaholic.com) looks to be in a bit of trouble with Alexa.

Seems they’re suddenly decided his mashup of the their traffic data & charts is a bad thing and they’re blocking his site from displaying it.

So anti Web 2.0, anti-consumer, anti-information.  Is Alexa so egotisitcal that they think their platform can’t be improved upon?  Everything can be tweaked, added to, niche’ed to provide greater value to a subset of internet users, and that’s exactly what Ron is doing here.

I think some of the “big” companies don’t understand that this type of thing actually provides them more exposure & thus more traffic, in the end, rather then detract from their site.

And a big bummer for all us fans of Statsaholic.com - the mashups there are awesome.

I don’t agree with Alexa’s action - Ron is clear on the site the the data comes from Alexa, there’s no misrepresentation or shadiness.  And he makes a point - Alexa is not without competition.

s Alexa blocking us again. It appears that the decision makers at Amazon think mashups and creative use of their api is fine, unless you get successful with it. TechCrunch, Matt Mullenweg (founder of WordPress), WebForth, and Michelle MacPhearson have covered the story so far. If you blog about it, contact me and I’ll link to you here. If you’re a member of the press, call me for an interview. Perhaps it would help if you contact Alexa and let them know what you think. Either way, thank
