Butterfly Reports Review: A Critical Look

by Michelle MacPhearson on April 4, 2008

Mike Filsaime’s “Butterfly Reports” project was Beta launched and you’ve probably seen a few emails hyping up the system.

Butterfly Reports

It’s meant to be a way for folks to brand ebooks on many topics with their affiliate link, distribute them, and add new ebooks to the system for others to distribute.

So, if you’re an affiliate marketer, you simple find an ebook in the system on your topic, brand it and distribute and - and watch the commissions come in. :-)

If you’re a product owner, you create a report, upload it to their system, affiliates brand and distribute it and bring you more traffic and sales.

Because it’s Mike, and because everyone in the world is promoting ButterflyReports, it may end up seeming like the answer to all your problems. So I wanted to give you a bit of a closer look at the system, from the inside, both pro’s and con’s:

CONS

  • It’s in Beta. So it’s not perfect - there’s a lack of training materials, and I think the interior navigation could be cleaned up a bit and made more user friendly.
  • There aren’t a whole lot of reports inside yet for you to brand / distribute
  • Mike will bring in a lot of member’s - that’s a given. So as the distributor of a report, you may find many other folks trying to distribute the same thing. (This is normally not an issue though, as so many people sign up for things and then don’t take action. Plus, if you’re just distributing to your email list, they likely won’t get the same thing from someone else. So this isn’t an issue that actually concerns me, but it bears mentioning).
  • The free level of signup only allows 25% of the links inside a report to be branded with your affiliate link, and 1 report to be added (with our as the author) per month, and you only get 2 new reports each month to distribute (there is, of course, an upgrade from this level of membership, see more below)

PROS

  • The reports are in different subjects, not just internet marketing. This surprised me (pleasantly) as it’s useful to people who market outside of IM.
  • Mike will bring in a lot of member’s - that’s a given. So as the creator of a report, you could in fact see some excellent distribution of your materials and actually bring in some traffic.
  • Nice freebies to give to your list (or to use as incentives to sign up for your list) - I’m always looking for good content to give out, so I appreciate this.
  • Free signup is available to check the system out
  • Platinum membership allows 100% of links in a report to be branded with your affiliate link, you can add as many reports to the site as you’d like, you get 4 reports to distribute written by Butterfly Reports staff each month, and unlimited access to member contributed reports (plus some bonuses)

Honestly, at the free signup level, the system isn’t something I’d put a lot of time and effort into. With only 25% of links being branded to you, you’ll not pull in day-job-killing income. Again, I do still like that it provides a place and a way to get free info to your subscribers (or to use as an incentive for signup) and if that’s all you need, then perhaps the free level is appropriate for you.

I did take the Platinum level offer because, if I’m going to distribute something, I want ALL the links to be coded with my affiliate link. Also, as a product owner, I want to be able to contribute more then one report per month.

I think as a product owner the system, particularly since it’s in beta right now, is especially powerful. You’ll be able to contribute reports immediately, and those will be inside the member’s area as the site goes into public launch and finally into it’s viral replication (as most of Mike’s things do, and I do anticipate this will as well). So having tons of my reports sitting inside their portal from the start, as new people join every day, is a powerful and compelling reason for me to join.

I wonder if one can write reports for products you are an affiliate of? I believe so, but I’m not certain. If so, this would REALLY be worthwhile. As free members will only have 25% of the links branded with their code, you would have 75% of the links branded with your code, and an army of Butterfly Reports members distributing it for you, bringing in affiliate sales for you.

Also, I went to Platinum because I want to be able to pull as many reports from the system as I need, and don’t care to be limited to monthly quotas.

So - I like the system. I think it’s worthwhile, at the Platinum level. No, it’s not the answer to all your marketing problems, but it will give you free content to distribute (and create goodwill with your subscribers and website visitors) and give you an avenue through which you can reach, literally, thousands of affiliates as the creator of a report.

Visit Butterfly Reports to check it out.

Oh, you should know too - if you signup and decline the “Platinum” offer, and then later decide to upgrade, it will cost you more. So if there’s any doubt in your mind about going Platinum or not, the price you see on initial signup is the lowest offered for the package and you won’t see Platinum at that price again.

I am going to go for platinum but I don’t like that you pay annually for it instead of monthly. I have nightmares about forgetting my membership fees LOL

I have a platinum membership to butterfly reports, and one thing that I have noticed is that lots of people are downloading reports from the website for their use, but very few people are adding reports.

This gives new writers a huge opportunity for exposure. If you write a report it will probably be downloaded thousands of times.

Create a report with quality information and everyone will love you, and your report will be sure to go viral.
