How To Have Freedom

I moved about a month ago to a smaller house, with fewer rooms and less square footage. It’s also not sitting on 5 acres (so I guess I have to re-write my “About” page!) – in fact, it’s a townhouse, so I don’t even really have a yard.

I’ve sold several cars and there are more up on Craigslist. Plus ATV’s of various shapes and sizes.

We had 4 TV’s w/ cable boxes, now we have 2 (one in the living room and one in my bedroom). Same thing with computers – had a ton of ‘em, now there’s 2 in the house (one for me and one for my husband).

I gave away a truckload (literally) of books to the library, and another truckload of clothes. We filled two dumpsters trashing other stuff (pannini grill? GONE! Gazelle? GONE! etc.) out of the old house.

WHY “DOWNGRADE”?

Many of the things I once wanted – like a 5 acre farm nestled somewhere between oblivion and obscurity – I’ve since moved on from. It’s no longer what I wanted, but I somehow felt “stuck” in it, like,”This is ours now, so we have to take care of it….” And let me tell you, 5 acres is a lot of work!

The day I realized I didn’t necessarily have to stay there forever (DUH!) I starting preparing to move.

Because THAT freedom is the beauty of the “internet marketing lifestyle.” If there’s an internet connection, I’m working. We could live anywhere.

J-REEZY GOES HOMELESS

John Reese sent out an email message today about his own downgrading – he’s reduced his belongings to fit in a single backpack and sold off everything else, including his home!

Funny how people might be thinking the same things about their lives (like he and I were) without even speaking about it, blogging about it, etc. I know a few other folks in the business who are similarly liquidating and freeing themselves from the possessions they no longer need or want.

Maybe you’re thinking about it too?

POSSESSIONS AS RESPONSIBILITIES

I realized my whole family has acquired a lot of crap we don’t love, care for, need or even want anymore. Time to purge, time to pare down to the bare essentials and really simplify.

We have to remember that possessions aren’t a representation of ourselves. We don’t need to display works of literature on our shelves to show or prove we are learned people, or own many cars to display our wealth, etc. We also don’t need to save broken, old, damaged or unloved items “just in case” because this is a scarcity mentality hidden under the veil of being frugal.

The freedom that comes from this business is an incredible freedom. You work as much as you’d like, sometimes more, sometimes less. You earn what you put into it. You live anywhere, you vacation anywhere. You make incredible friends and are given opportunities and experiences you once could have only imagined.

But then sometimes we kill that freedom by burdening ourselves with lots of responsibilities in the way of possessions, or on the form of social and business obligations we really don’t care for but feel like we “have” to do.

THE EMPTY NEST

I decided not to take any of my old furniture with to the new house. Most of it has been beat up on and abused by small children for 7 years and it showing its age.

The day after we moved, I went to a local Ashley Furniture store, purchased everything we’d need for the new, smaller home. They said it would be here Monday (4 days later). It’s been 3 1/2 weeks now, still no furniture.

I could be really pissed. Sometimes when my kids are sitting at the kitchen island eating their dinner and I’m hovering over a counter with no place to sit I kinda am. A dining room table or a couch would be helpful!

But the furniture WILL get here eventually, even if they’re dragging their feet. And my getting upset about it only adds another element to my life that I have to “deal” with – in this case, I’d have to manage the emotion of being upset.

Plus, my family and I have had the benefit of getting by with little more than our clothes, toiletries and dishes to eat from for nearly a month. And that’s not a bad lesson to learn – everything else is really just a comfort.

We’ll really love those couches when they DO get here!

HOW TO HAVE FREEDOM

In order to enjoy the freedom that life gives you, you must not be mired down with unnecessary possessions, unnecessary social or business obligations or unnecessary emotions.

Simply remove those that are not serving you well.

Same goes with your business. Those sites, techniques, email subscriptions or tools that aren’t directly propelling you towards your end goal should be eliminated.

When only the things that are important and functional are in front of you, then you will only focus on and spend your time on the things that are important and functional.

You’ll reach your goals faster, enjoy the things you love and have time to experience the life you really want to live.

I’m powerless to ignore a tag from John Taylor, as it was in a private forum that I met and learned much of what I know now about internet marketing from him and the others who were there. While I’m not a meme junkie, I’ve enjoyed reading incarnations of the “25 Things About Me” post from others as well, like Jack Humphrey and Michel Fortin. So let’s get it on!

Twenty-five random things about me, Michelle MacPhearson:

1. Some jobs I’ve had: admin assistant, selling leads to car dealerships, selling cars to people online, marketing assistant at a brokerage-type firm, tutor for a Sylvan Learning Center kind of place, clerk at a pet store, clerk at The Limited. Job suck, although I did have fun working in the car sales business.

2. I broke my wrist when I was 6 but we didn’t realize it was broken for a few days. It started to heal and when we went to the doctor, they had to re-break it. To do this, they grabbed my wrist and snapped it. No drugs cuz I was little. It hurt.

3. We have a Red Bone Coon Hound and a Lhasa Apso. They’re a weird combo of dogs to have.

4. I bite my nails.

5. For a short time, I “rode” with some Hell’s Angels guys.

6. I’m a San Francisco Bay Area, California girl, through and through. We live up near Lake Tahoe now and I love it here too, but I think I’ll always call the Bay Area home.

7. I got into internet marketing from an SEO side of things and a lot of what I learned/did back then was blackhat stuff.

8. I want to learn how to fuse and blow glass.

9. We drive simple cars – not the “internet marketing lifestyle” kinda thing you see a lota guys bragging about. Two Ford trucks and a Scion. We got the Scion to be a bit kinder on the environment (better gas mileage) for day to day errands. I think I want a Land Rover one day, but am gonna wait for the kids to get a bit older and less destructive. I have no desire for a Porsche or Lambo or whatever (although my husband might disagree on that one…)

10. My first car was a 1965 Oldsmobile 442. I used to drag race it. I’ve also had a 1965 Comet Cyclone and a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda. Right now, our “classic car” stable consists of a 1972 Datsun 510, it’s sweet!

11. Some of my favorite movies: Blow, Casino, Grosse Pointe Blank, Almost Famous, Snatch, Legends of the Fall.

12. When we first moved here to the country (we have 5 acres) we got chickens and put them in the coop in our barn. They all died from some disease the previous owners’ chickens had. We’ve been afraid to get new chickens ever since.

13. One of our favorite places to go for a weekend trip is Mendocino, on the California coast. My husband used to live there, so he knows all the cool local, non-tourist-y beach spots and killer restaurants.

14. I was born and raised San Francisco Irish Catholic. My grandparents are from Ireland (Wexford and Nenagh), and the story of how they came here with nothing and built an incredible life & family, with my Grandpa now the current President of the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge inspires me so much. If I can do only half of what they’ve done with their lives, I will be content.

15. My husband is 3 years younger than me. Does that make me a cougar?

16. My second son, who’s now two, was a homebirth. That means he was born at home, no hospital, on purpose. We had a midwife. It was intense, but awesome.

17. Because we live out in the middle of nowhere, a lot of our friends come here for a little mini-vacation. This means we have houseguests A LOT. One person just left Friday after being here a week, we’ve got 2 coming next week and then a big party with probably 20 people in mid February. I love that everyone is comfortable enough to just come here and hang out, but I also like quiet downtime. So sometimes I hide in my office.

18. Some of my favorite authors: Hunter S. Thompson, John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac. I’ve read everything those 3 have ever written.

19. While I’m not into fancy luxury cars, I do like collecting art. My husband is also an artist. One of my favorite galleries is Julie Baker Fine Art. We have several pieces from the artists she represents. I also have an awesome giant piece of a city skyline by Sabrina Ward Harrison. I’m into contemporary young artists.

20. I went to Ireland in the 90’s with San Francisco’s Mayor at the time, Frank Jordan. We were part of the San Francisco/Cork Sister City group. We spent time with the Mayor of Cork as well as the sitting President of Ireland, and Jean Kennedy Smith (John F. Kennedy’s sister), who was the US Ambassador to Ireland.

21. Pork chops are one of my most loved foods. I also like a nice tri-tip and can make a marinade that’ll cause a tiny explosion of happyness in your mouth with every bite.

22. We have two quads to ride around the property on – a big one and a kids one. I like dirtbikes too, but we don’t have any of those right now.

23. Guilty pleasures: I love watching crap reality TV. Biggest Loser, The Hills, Wife Swap, Top Chef and Real Housewives of Orange County are some of my favorites. I do enough thinking in real life, when I watch TV I want it to be mindless. Everything I watch is Tivo’d, I don’t channel surf.

24. I rarely drink caffeine, and when I do it makes me anxious and I regret it.

25. I rolled my truck exiting Highway 13 onto 24 East in Oakland a couple of years ago. Just lost the backend for no reason, was even driving under the speed limit. Scared the heck out of me, but I wasn’t seriously injured. I’ve been in 3 pretty ugly car accidents.

Over The Edge 2

I’m heading out to the “Over the Edge 2″ conference (way too early) on Saturday morning. Now, I don’t, as a rule, attend conferences because they’re usually far away (like Orlando) and most of the time I can get more work done at home rather then galavanting across the country.

But, I couldn’t refuse this one.

It’s put on by Ed Dale and Dan Raine of the Immediate Edge, a FANTASTIC membership site focusing on cutting edge marketing strategies coupled with solid selling, copywriting and market research techniques.

So Transparent I Got Pneumonia

I’ve been down and out, sick in bed with a nasty case of pneumonia. I’ve taken it very easy in hopes of not ending up in the hospital, my Dr. has encouraged it twice but hasn’t insisted… So I’ve been watching daytime court shows on TV and recovering.

I’m bummed I didn’t get to tell you my thoughts on the Stomper Launch – I did check out my review copy, and it’s excellent material. The Stomping the Search Engines CD-ROM is a perfect starting point for someone who wants to get caught up on SEO without pouring through forums or buying multiple products… And wow, that price point – S&H ONLY – was incredible. I hope you said yes, it is absolutely worth it. I really like that the whole Stomper crew is moving more towards transparency in their marketing and image in general too.

Transparency is incredibly important these days – with so many WAYS one can purchase a product, having the lowest price isn’t always the only decision making factor people use when determining who to buy from. Transparency – letting prospects know who you are, why you do what you do – can give you an edge over the competition.

Like what I do – I have several niche businesses I work in. But I also spend time teaching in the internet marking niche. I do it for two reasons. There’s money in the market (duh) and because I LOVE MY LIFE and I want YOU to have the freedom of working for yourself, working at home, too.

The economy? Yeah, lots of scary news here in the US. And there’s never been a better time to jump online. Because if you can’t depend on your job being there tomorrow, having income from your internet business rolling in will alleviate that anxiety.

Weekend Fight & Birthday Party

This weekend, a friend of my husband is having his yearly birthday blowout party at our house. We’ll have guests through Monday, and as such, I don’t anticipate posting. I think there will be about 10 people, in addition to me, my husband and our 2 boys.

For Saturday, my husband and I ordered the Pavlik v. Taylor boxing rematch on PPV. I haven’t watched much boxing since I was a little girl (my dad would watch sometimes) but we happened to watch Pavlik v. Taylor I a few months ago, and it was one of the best fights I’d ever seen. My husband had never watched boxing before, but he got totally sucked in. It was an incredible match. I don’t know if our houseguests care for boxing, but the heck with ‘em! We’re watching the fight Saturday (and rooting for Pavlik)!

I hope you have a great weekend too! Anyone else got fun plans for the 3-day weekend?

The feeds should come through fine too, although I noticed my feedreader recognized it as a “new” feed and downloaded all available content instead of just the unread items.Â If you’re a feed reader and that happens to you, my apologies.

Powerless Resolutions

After 6 1/2 LONG days, our power was finally restored after the big storms here in California.

We live in a pretty rural area, and the outage was caused by an oak tree down the road that was smashed to bits in the gale-force wind last Friday. Unfortunately, there are only about 14 houses on our street, and thus only about 14 households effected by the downed oak – so, it seems, our power restoration was put on the back burner while PG&E tended to larger communities.

Being rural, not having power means not having a working well – so we had no running water for the last 6 1/2 days. No toilets, no washing dishes, no grabbing a drink, brushing of teeth, etc. Our house is completely electric, so we didn’t have a gas stove to cook on. Our one saving grace was the fact that we are heated by a wood stove, so we were able to remain warm, and, on occasion, boil water for cooking with.

What did I learn? A lot of things – how to be more prepared when the next storm comes around (being from the San Francisco area, big storms and extended power outages are new to us). How to get creative when met with very limited options. How close we, as humans, REALLY are to living primitively, despite our gadgets and illusions otherwise. How much I missed our cheery light fixtures when faced with darkness for so long. That we should keep up on our laundry and dishes better, so as not to be left without.

And, I learned that even the most well-intentioned and well-laid plans sometimes hit a speed bump, and we must carry on.

I’m one of those folks who absolutely love the New Year – full of possibilities, blank slate and all that. I’m not one for resolutions, but more a positive, forward-thinking attitude adjustment. And I had a set of very nice, doable intentions for my business, to get started once my 5 y/o went back to school from Winter Break. That time period coincided with our outage, and nothing was accomplished.

One of my faults is that I start off things very excited, but when hit with a roadblock, I can and do tend to get discouraged easily. Not all the time. But it wouldn’t be unlike me to throw up my hands and wonder, “Why bother!”

To make matters a bit more hairy, I seem to be developing a flu my 5 y/o son brought home. Which will, likely, keep me out of commission a bit longer.

I’ve not let it go to my head though. I’m adopting the attitude that “everything happens for a reason” and waiting patiently for the time to be right for me to carry on with my projects. Something is clearly telling me it ain’t now!

In the meantime, we lost all the food in our fridge due to it getting warm in there a few days in – what a nice way to start fresh in our eating habits! I’m loathe to throw out food, but in being forced to, I can make a point to restock with the healthiest whole foods we can get. I was able to catch up on a lot of reading – Hunter Thompson’s biography (a Christmas gift from my mom), “The Things They Carried, “A Country Year” and a re-read of “Getting Things Done.” We finished moving furniture to put my office downstairs and my sons’ room upstairs, which should help the “flow” of the house a bit.

Plus, we all learned a bit about sticking it out together when the going gets, well, dark.

My New Year didn’t start off the way I intended, by any means, particularly professionally. But it’s a story to tell one day, and laugh at, and perhaps a few lessons learned that were more important at that moment.

Well, things are rather slow around here these days, eh?

I’m still buried in non-IM niches, as well asÂ getting a new routine for the family now that my oldest has started Kindergarten.Â It’s lunch packing and homework (I can’t believe how much homework he gets!) and classroom volunteering and whatnot.

I’m considering putting together an ongoing case-study of using “Social Media Daily” methods to promote a non-IM, niche site. Â I think it will be a good way of showing exactly what goes into this kind of site promotion, as well as demonstrating the kind of results that can be achieved (multiple slots on the first page of Google).

So much for getting #1 in Google – what about achieving #1, #4, #7 and #8?Â Much better, IMHO…. Â

Anyway, I’ve near wrapped up these additional projects, and will be back on the blog in full force with some great info on YouTube ranking.

I don’t usually do the “meme” thing, but Andrew tagged me to participate in the “Gotta Get Goals” meme started by Alex Shalman, so here I am.

The goals are supposed to be:

…the top 5 to 10 goals that you gottaâ€™ get so that you can truly say you have achieved your wildest dreams in life. These have to be your best, most exclusive, and over-the-top goals that you can pick off your goals list.

Maybe this makes me a bore, but there isn’t much that is my “wildest dreams” or “over-the-top.” I truly feel most of my goals are accessible and doable. Not because I don’t think big, but because I believe I can accomplish just about anything. But some of those things include:

Raising happy, well-adjusted kids - I’ve got two boys (4 y/o and 4 months old) and if they can reach adulthood with great self esteem and a love of life, I’ll be a happy mama.
$1mil in sales this year – I’d like to reach $1mil in sales this year from my different sources of income.
Create “Freedom Business Systems” – This is a James Brausch thing, it’s about making your business run without you. I’d like to have this in place within two years.
Go to a ridiculously star-studded Hollywood party – just for fun.
Buy my husband a rally car – It’s his dream.
Get our farm running – we’ve got 5 acres in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and we’d like to have a little home farm going.Â Goats, chickens, guinea fowl, a nice veggie garden.Â It’s a lot more work then us city kids thought it would be!
Help some people - I’d like what I do professionally to help people – teach them, provide tools for them, guide them.Â But getting those “Thank You” emails is awesome – to know that what I did made a difference in someone else’s life and got them that much closer to their own goals is awesome.

So, nothing earth shattering.Â I love my life as it is, and just want to grow on what I already have.Â I’m tagging Ed Dale, Jason Cain, Greg Ray, Jack Humphrey & Bo Bang.Â Hop to fellas!
