Linking To Your Own Content

Welcome to Day 23 of the Internet Marketing Makeover (#31DIMM for short)!

By now you know that a well linked-to site will generally outperform a site with few links pointing to it, everything else being equal.

So one of our jobs, when developing a new site, is to go out and get links for it (we’ve used strategies to do so in previous #31DIMM posts).

But we can also optimize the links on our own site by linking to our own content more often and with the keyword phrase we want the linked-to page to rank for as anchor text.

This lets the search engines know that the page you’ve linked to again and again with the anchor text “Green Widgets” is your best and most relevant page on the subject. Plus, you’ll be giving your readers other pages to visit on your site, which will help them find the exact information they’re looking for and increase the length of their visit.

DAY 23 OBJECTIVE

Create links from your pages/articles/posts to your most important pages, using the keyphrase they are targeting as anchor text.

DAY 23 ASSIGNMENT

You should know from your research on Day 10 the most current keywords your market is searching for, and you should have optimized your site on-page for those keyphrases on Day 11.

Now you’ll link from pages on your site that mention a keyphrase your targeting to the main page that targets that keyphrase.

For example, you’re targeting the following keyphrases:

green widgets
blue widgets
red widgets
yellow widgets

You have a page on your site for each of these keyphrases, all optimized and targeted.

But in your “green widgets” page, you also make mention of “blue widgets,” as it made sense to do so in the context of your article.

That mention of “blue widgets” should be linked to your “blue widgets” page to make the most of your on-site search engine optimization (and give visitors a link where they can access more info, should they want to).

You can do this automatically in Wordpress by using the plugins aLinks or Crosslinker. Simply load the plugins with the kyphrases you want to link automatically, and the URL you want those keyphrases to link to.

Consider variations, i.e. your “blue widgets” page might be linked to by the phrase “blue widgets” AND “blue widget”, assuming you don’t have a separate page devoted to the singular use of the keyphrase.

If your site isn’t with Wordpress, this work will have to be done manually! (One of the many reasons a Wordpress site is, typically, much easier to manage and optimize than your standard HTML site).

Once you’ve linked instances of keywords you’re targeting to their associated page on your site, you’ve alerted the search engines to your absolute best resources for those keyphrases and given human visitors one more page to click through and be exposed to your advertising and offers!

Welcome to Day 15 of the Internet Marketing Makeover (#31DIMM for short)!

Internet marketing is a marathon, not a sprint. That’s why my personal theme for running my business is “Momentum.”

Maintaining and cultivating momentum, that is, forward movement, is imperative in building your business. And seemingly small movements can build momentum over time and lead to bigger opportunities in the future.

In today’s #31DIMM assignment you’ll develop a process for one small movement that will help your sites build rank and traffic over time.

DAY 15 OBJECTIVE

Create a bookmarking process for new posts, pages and sites.

DAY 15 ASSIGNMENT

Social bookmarking is still a valuable source of incoming links, helpful in getting new posts or pages indexed, and even traffic.

That being said, it’s not as powerful as it used to be. For that reason, I recommend you use an automated process to bookmark your content.

It’s not worth spending hours manually doing this work, but it is certainly worth spending a few minutes to add new content into a system you’ve put in place.

Everything new you come out with should be bookmarked. New blog posts, new web sites, YouTube video uploads, new pages on established sites, your social networking profile pages. Everything.

Social Bookmarking build links to your new content – search engines like it when you have links. It also alerts the search engines when you do have new content, so they can come and index it, rank it and start sending visitors your way. Finally, as your content and links are listed on social bookmarking sites, people may click through on those links and visit your site.

For these reasons, social bookmarking is vital. It’s a small step that, when done consistently over time, will produce big results.

How to do it?

There are several options, which I’ll explain. The important part is that you pick one and STICK TO IT! Do it every time you have new content, no excuses!

Firstly, you can use a service like Social Marker to bookmark your new content.

I explain Social Marker in a video I created for the Thirty Day Challenge:

Social Marker is a semi-automated process. You’ll have to spend some time setting up accounts at all the social bookmarking sites, but once you’ve done that Social Marker will help you fill out the submission forms when you do add your content.

If you’re looking for full automation, I recommend Traffic Bug. With Traffic Bug, you don’t have to create accounts at the social bookmarking sites nor do you have to physically submit your new content to the sites – it’s all done for you. All you have to do is tell Traffic Bug when you have new content.

The ultimate? Hire someone to manage your social bookmarking for you.

I have an outsourcer who combs all of my sites for new content every week. She then takes the URL’s to all that new content across all of my sites (this blog, other internet marketing stuff, niche sites, etc.) and adds it to Traffic bug for me. It costs me a few dollars a week and is totally hands off.

If you’ve only got one site, this combo might be overkill for you!

But the important part is that you select a method and stick to it, day in and day out.

This kind of natural link building (in that internal, deep links are built over time) is one of those small steps that build greater momentum over time, and you’ll thank yourself for implementing it as you see your backlinks count grow!

Here’s How To Get 25 One-Way Links

It’s as simple at that… TextLinks is offering 25 one-way links, for free.

No catches – I’ve done it already, so this is a recommendation based on actually using the service.

A word on buying links: No, Google doesn’t want you to buy links. Yes, Google has delisted websites it has found to buy links. Should you use link building services like TextLinks? In my tests, using both TextLinks and many other services, I’ve never had a problem. I believe the best way to use links like this is by ensuring these kinds of links are not the ONLY kind of link your site has. See my post on Link Mixology for more information.

It’s a free trial offer but you don’t have to give TextLinks your credit card or PayPal account to get in.

When you select your links, you can choose to have sitewide or sidebar placement, or links in individual articles. You even get to choose the anchor text you’d like!

Plus, you can link to your homepage or any internal page you’d like, TextLinks DOES allow for deep linking.

I used the TextLinks service in a case study site that’s being documented inside Crowd Mountain, and the site has performed excellently and is earning passive affiliate income.

And the links you get you keep for life!

Link Mixology: The 12 Kinds Of Links Your Site Needs

Are you familiar with “Link Mixology”?

How about the 12 kinds of links you must be getting to your site?

While even *I’ve* been guilty of saying, “A link is a link is a link,” that’s a bit oversimplified.

While more links is better then less links, having certain kinds of links outweigh and are more valuable than others.

Links from “authority sites” for example, pass more “link juice” on to your site than, say, links from unestablished sites.

And also important is the “link mixology” – that is, the distribution of different kinds of links from different kinds of sites to your own site.

Like, if you have ONLY social bookmarking sites linking to your site, that’s really obvious to the search engines, and can get you banned. It looks fake – because it is fake.

The search engines are sophisticated enough to detect that kind of manipulation.

Normal sites have a good “link mixology” – they have incoming links from different types of sites.

We never want our site to have all it’s links, or a great majority of it’s links, coming from one “kind” of site. Instead, mix it up. Your sites link mixology will look more natural and you’ll gain by increased ranking in the search engines when you do.

Here are the 12 kinds of sites you should be getting links from:

Internal Links: These are links from yourself, to yourself. Linking to your own relevant content, or sitewide links like “Home.” In some blogs, like this one, you’ll see links below each post to related articles. You’ll see links to category and archive pages. These are all internal links.
Directories: Directories list websites, usually under different categories of interest. The classic is DMOZ, but there are a lot of others out there you submit your URL to and get a link from.
Press Releases: Press release submission and distribution services, like PRWeb, allow you to submit a press release (gotta come up with something newsworthy to say, but even the launch of your site is sufficient). That press release will be distributed to syndication services and republished – with your link.
Article Directories: Getting a link from article directories is as simple as penning an article and submitting it. Usually your link will be in the “About the Author” bio box. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of article directories out there for you to submit to.
RSS/Blog Syndication: Submitting your blogs RSS feed to syndication services will usually not only give you a link, but each time you publish a new blog post that individual article will get a link.
Blog Comments: Easy enough – leave a comment on relevant blogs in your niche to get these kinds of links. Don’t be a jerk though, use your name and say something relevant and interesting.
Videos: Sites like YouTube, and the many others, often allow you to link to your site either in your video’s description or on your profile page. Some let you do both.
Forums: Forums usually center around a particular topic, so they’re great in being very relevant links. You can link in your profile and/or signature line at most forums.
.edu Links: From educational sites – colleges, local school districts, etc.
.gov links: Like .edu links these links usually carry a lot of weight, but it can be tough to get the government to link to your site!
Social Bookmarking: Social bookmarking services allow people to collect their favorite links in one place. If you bookmark your own stuff (there are services that help you do this automatically also) you get a link from the service. Even better if you produce content your readers love and bookmark themselves to refer back to.
Social Media sites: Kind of a catch-all here, but this can refer to places like Twitter and Facebook, where people network with each other, to places like Squidoo and Hubpages, where you can place your content on a page on their site and link out to your site.

There’s are other places and ways to get links, like buying text links, trading links with another site owner or participating in a link exchange service.

But the ones above are typically what you’ll work on as an internet marketer because they are under your control, that is, you can go out there and get them yourself without spending cash or begging other webmasters.

Some exciting news!

I’m going to be running some case study tests on the various “3 Way” link building services out there.

#3 In Just Over 1 Week

A 30 Minute Backlinks customer wrote in with a few keyword selection questions, and we corresponded back and forth a few times on the topic as well as some info on meta keyword, title tag and meta description contents.

Incredible new case study!

(First, sorry I didn’t have time to do any fancy video editing of this thing – I’ve been buried in doing my taxes all day. Yes, I do my own taxes… I’m wondering why right about now…)

I purchased a new domain on 2/24. Ran 30 Minute Backlinks on it on 2/25. The video above shows the astounding results. What’s amazing is that this has been possible if, instead of your own web page, you put up a Squidoo lens or Hubpage. But with your own – NEW! – domain, that’s just unheard of! And it’s important too – ranking with a lens is nice, but you don’t have control of it and can loose all your hard work if some jerk reports you as a “spammer.” For that reason I advocate folks always promoting their own domain before any feeder/hub sites.

I’m surprising myself as these top SE rankings keep churning in – I knew this method worked, and have been using it for about 2 years now, & the consistency from new domain to new domain, again and again, is awesome! I’m so excited to share 30 Minute Backlinks with you – as you can see, it does amazing (& quick!) things for your link popularity and search engine results!

Building Links Too Fast = Blacklisting?

With Social Media Daily, and now 30 Minute Backlinks, I’m often asked if it’s OK to get links to a brand new site and/or will getting links to a new domain get it “blacklisted.”

In short, the answer is yes it OK and no it won’t get your site “banned.” Every site desperately needs links, and going out and getting them will not hurt you. You may have heard eejits on forums telling you getting too many links to fast can hurt your site – and that’s true. But there’s a BIG variable in their scare tactics – the “too fast” thing. Truth is, if you generate 1000 links in 3 hours from ONLY Blogger blogs (for example), yeah, that *could* (maybe… it doesn’t always…) raise a red flag in the search engines eyes. It takes some black hat voodoo to make that happen, and the search engines know it.

Do Nofollow Links Count – Redux

I like blog commenting as a link building strategy. If you can add to the conversation, it’s an easy way to get both human visitors and backlinks.

But what about “nofollow?”

Nofollow is often ignored. Last year, Ben Fisher did a case study to see if nofollow links counted – they certainly seemed to, based on his results. Neil Patel “broke” the story with screenshots, and that post is now recognized as the “nofollow is BS” authority.

Because I recommend tools like CommentHut and Comment Sniper (which server 2 very different purposes when trying to get traffic from blog commenting), I often get emails from folks asking about the “nofollow” issue – why comment on blogs if it’s nofollow, blah blah blah. So it’s clear there’s still some confusion within the population on the value, if any, of nofollow links.

I thought I’d run the same study as Ben did last year and see if I could get my site to rank for a keyword that (1) is not on my site and (2) only use blog comments to get anchor text links for my keyword. I, like Ben, chose a misspelling simply because I’d be able to see results very quickly that way.

The results as of 5:44pm PST on 2/18/2008 after leaving about 15 blog comments with the help of Comment Hut to find relevant blogs are that I am ranked #1 for the keyphrase in Google, Yahoo and MSN:

What does this mean?

Nofollow links with well chosen anchor text can pass link juice
Blog commenting on nofollow blogs is still an effective way to increase search engine rank for a term
Thoughtful and interesting blog comments will always bring human visitors
