I posted about video marketing and included some tips on making your piece go viral, based on the example of a fella who’s got over 1 million views to just one of his videos.
A reader wrote the following and I think my answer has a couple of gems that might help you (1) understand why the example video worked and (2) apply these ideas to your own work.
Hi Michelle,
Thanks for bring vid #1 to my attention. The pointers
about including the URL in the video are super! I
appreciate it.But I simply DON’T get why vid#2 got 1 million views. Perhaps I’m getting old and senile, but I simply
didn’t find anything in the video that would make it
go viral the way it has.
Obviously 1 million people disagree with me![]()
Can you shed any light, from your prespective, of what
made this 30 seconds so popular?I’m not downing or critcising the video. I’m honestly
trying to learn something here. And I simply don’t
see why it’s so popular. Perhaps I’m missing the
forest for the trees?Any light, from your point of view, that you can shed
would be helpful.
And my response:
Well… I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

I think it’s just so popular because
(1) the music is really cheesy in an 80’s revival kind of way, and that’s pretty “in” right now
(2) It’s short enough that it doesn’t lose your attention
(3) Lots of people can relate the other “typing LOL but not actually laughing” concept
(4) It’s just some guy singing, which is simple & accessible - people can identify with that more then a huge budgeted videoSo those are my ideas!
Even if you personally didn’t find the videos amusing, 1 million people did, right? Any of these concepts can be applied to your videos to help them reach more people. And maybe give them a little smile too…
