Yes, I've noticed the same benefits from "nofollow" links. ALL links are good. Plus, a good comment can also be a lead generator as well as establish authority and credibility. Plus it's fun to just participate, which is a personal benefit much overlooked in the hyper SEO mindset.

I believe that some links are better than none. When I first started creating my website, and link-building, I commented on some blogs that I was reading before I even knew about creating my own website. I knew that they were "nofollow", but they still helped out my website when they ranked. I'm in the affiliate marketing Niche, so I don't know if it's just the quality of my website, or if I was lucky and received a good amount of traffic. I agree with you on the comment where you said that something is better than nothing. It's always great to have your anchor links out there.

Are you sure about this? So they create link juice but you did not mention if it is less or equal to a regular link. Whats the point in everyone using nofollow then if it does not do its purpose? I really confused about he whole thing. I had just finished a project getting ranking under a very extremely competitive keyword and it took over 1200 backlinks to achieve it and I did not post a backlink on any site with less than a 3 PR. Also I skipped every site with nofollow tags. I wounder if it would have taken less than 1200 links to reach our goal if nofollow would have came into paly. Because most of the good sites that carry a lot of weight you can bet have nofollow. Just doesnt make since, but then again nothing with Google every does.

Great post. I've been wondering this for a while and whether or not all the hard work actually pays off if someone has the no follow attribute turned on in there blog.

Thanks!

great test michelle!!

here's my take... people should stop doing their nutz over nofollow / dofollow. google is heavily assessing on links coming from broad social contribution, ie blog comments, videos, web 2 properties, bookmarks, directories, photo sharing, social networks and the list goes on.

the point... be active in ALL of it and ignore what everyone says about nofollow -- just get LINKS!!!

the fact is the only reason I commented here was.

1/. I like Michelle
2/. To get a link with anchor text

I did not check if she has enabled dofollow on this blog -- personally i don't care.

Cheers,

In the spirit of this article, I thought it would be appropriate to leave this comment with a URL and see if my traffic increases. :) Of course, it looks like other people already did the same here. Anyway, I did find the post to be interesting, and it helped me to think about nofollow in ways I hadn't really explored it before.

I agree that that nofollow links do help in ranking a keyword, what I'm not sure of yet is the importance being given by Google to the nofollow link. I believe that Google gives more importance to dofollow links than nofollow links.

I'm in the 'all links have value' camp too. Firstly, because google isn't the only search engine, but mainly because I believe any link to your site is a good thing and must count for something.
