Who thinks Dogster would be a good point of contact for dog lovers and those marketing to them?
Woof!
Ok, seriously, 203k dogs on the site, and it just received $1 million in VC to expand it’s reach. And you’re too late if you’re thinking Catster – it’s already around.

That said, there’s gobs of opportunity on Dogster & Catster. You could go old school and just buy advertising – and I think if these folks are enthusiastic enough to set up pages for their dogs (and some even pay to do so), they’ll actually respond to ads much better then “regular” social networking sites… Think new and different – something that would catch their eye. My mother in law raved a few months back about a dog water bowl that didn’t spill when in a moving vehicle. I mean, RAVED, like, crazy about the thing evangalistic – every manufacturer’s best advertising kind of raving.
Dogster features groups, a telling tag cloud (lookit! Halloween and Christmas are getting big already – your *market research* bells should be ringing), video, “community newsletter,” as well as the requisite friends list, a system of rating kinda like a “hot or not” but without the mean, blogs, groups and forums.
Allows HTML in a profile… Although I don’t see many people using it.
Lots of room here if you have a relevant product – and if you don’t, you can find one at the bigger affiliate networks. Also, depending on where your strengths lie, consider a layout type site for Dogster, if their code allows it.
Call to action: Market Dog stuff on Dogster. Market cat stuff on Catster. Try not to say “aw” while you’re browsing the pages.
