Last night my husband went out to water the garden. He’s a man of many interests, an artist and musician, but more then anything horticulture is his passion. He loves getting his hands in the dirt and watching things grow while turning our 5 acre wildland into a gorgeous botanical oasis.
He’d finished watering, and we sat down outside to enjoy the cool mountain breeze. And he started telling me about how one should hand water new plantings for a minimum of 6 months before installing any kind of drip system or automatic watering. In doing so, you’re able to control the watering more effectively, see how the water flows and later determine exactly the type and frequency of your automated watering system. Kind of like market research, in that you’re getting all your info ahead of time before jumping in.
I wholeheartedly agree… Even though gardening isn’t exactly one of my own passions. But I get his point.
And he thought that when he helps our little old lady neighbors with their own gardens, he should tell them that in the future. Many seems to want help with drip systems on flower beds near their houses, and my husband was telling me he’ll suggest they hand water instead, at least for a while.
I wondered how they’d react. If, after his explanation, they’d see *WHY* hand watering would be beneficial for a period. If they’d be open to the idea.
Unfortunately, probably not. Because they don’t want to hand water. They want it automated. The small benefit derived from hand watering is not worth it to them given the huge conveinance of a drip system.
And it brought me back to my own efforts to educate a market of people hell-bent on MySpace marketing.
There is value in MySpace marketing. There is value in Facebook, Twitter, Pownce, Del.icio.us, (insert other hot site), all of them. Absolute value in them. But to depend on any one for your traffic is insane!
And this is something I’ve spent a lot of time trying to teach. Yes! Use MySpace! But don’t forget about the multitudes of other sites out there. Don’t overlook organic SEO in favor of StumbleUpon traffic.
But it seems that, at times, the audience is not interested in the message. Hard-core MySpace marketers, like bands, often have little to no interest in branching outside of MySpace.
And people who want drip systems and automatic sprinklers have little to no interest in hand watering.
Such is life. People do not always want to hear what is necessarily best for them.
I told my husband my thoughts; that the message must fit the market. That little old ladies who call him because he is kind and they need help putting in a drip system for their flower bed probably do not want to hear about the zen of hand watering.
He suggested that the whole hand-watering thing would probably be better fit for a talk at the local nursery or garden club; to people who are invested in and interested in the absolute best for their plants.
He’s decided to take his message to the right market.
Remember to do the same. If your market is resistant to your message, you may be sending them the wrong message.

Loved it!
I loved this post! This analogy is great and I never thought of it this way before. I am not a gardener either, but this totally makes sense.
I loved this post! It is a great comparison! I really believe that the social networking sites are the new wave of markeitng now. I personally like Facebook, but they are all good to use.
