John Jonas put up a blog post yesterday about The Social Media Myth that I thought would really irritate me.
It’s called, “Social Media is Garbage!”
I saw that headline and thought, “Here we go again, another marketer trying to be popular by bashing something that people are into these days…”
But I know John personally, and I know he’s on the pulse of no-nonsense marketing – I even wrote about his brilliant outsourcing system here and here.
So I wasn’t surprised that what I found was a well thought out, critical look at how marketers use social media. He’s right – social media IS garbage the way most people approach it (that’s why I wrote the Social Media Myth). Read John’s post and weigh in your own thoughts in his comments – there’s already an interesting discussion going on.

Hi Michelle,
I actually agree with him. Just leave it up to marketers to dilute the conversations and twist them into something that only benefits them and not the social community.
So many marketers are in it for the “right” now and not using social media to brand themselves and their business for later on.
Garbage? Yes and no. There’s different strokes for different folks. It’s all about what your goals are with Social Media. You explain it beautifully in your Social Media Myth report. A must download by the way
So, yes garbage if you don’t know what you want to get out of it and no if you do and have a well executed plan.
