Last week Darren asked people if they swore on their blogs. Results are in, and it looks like 40% of respondents do, at least occasionally.
I swear like a dirty Irish sailor in real life. Of course, I do know how to behave when the occasion warrants it. I clean up well.
Some people think all swearing is crass and vulgar, due to a bad vocabulary and lack of imagination. Some think it can make a person come across as more “real” in a business setting; not all tight-laced and stiff.
I don’t swear on this blog (or at least don’t recall doing so), although, incidentally, installment III of “How I Got Started In Internet Marketing” does include some choice language. It’s not mine though, it’s a quote. It’ll be published tomorrow. My not swearing here has been something of a choice, I haven’t come across an occasion where it’s warranted enough. I’m not opposed to it though, should the need arise.
I’m probably more likely to swear verbally then in the written word. You don’t know how many videos I’ve made, messed up in, and had to edit out the “%*&$%^&!!!”
One of my videos, I forgot which, someone told me I “dumbed things down” too much and spoke to the camera like the watchers were morons. Funny thing is, that’s how I talk. I’m from California, like, you know? Can’t help it. :-) (Of course, other people say it was perfect, and still others say I go too fast and don’t explain well enough, so it’s true you can never please everyone).
For personal blogs, I really believe that whatever goes, it’s personal, that’s the point. I adore Dooce.
Do you think swearing has a place in a business-ish setting, like an internet marketing blog? Why/why not?

You asked, “Do you think swearing has a place in a business-ish setting, like an internet marketing blog? Why/why not?”
I would have to vote no. The fact is, you don’t really know your audience. Swearing might offend some. Not swearing offends no one.
