Sites That Hypnotize

Is your sales page site hypnotizing your visitors into buying?

I’ll tell you right now I’m no copywriting expert - so I won’t be giving your copywriting advice.  But I do have some test results to share with you.

Are you testing your salespages?  Please do.  You’ll make more money.

Ok.  Let’s start with the “type” of site.  Direct sales pages convert more then “Corporate” style websites.  You want your visitors to have no options but to read and get sucked into - your copy.  No outbound links, no FAQ’s or “About Us” pages. Just your sales message.

I discussed this a bit in yesterday’s entry as well.  The big bold headlines, the flashy graphics all convert better.  If you’re not using them, start to.  Test it. The numbers will tell you exactly what to do.

Video: In all my salespages, all my tests, pages with video convert better then without video.  I’ve used all kinds of video - from “commercial” style clips (see an example at Tubeinator) to a walk through of what a product does to videos that show proof a product/concept works (example at 30 Minute Backlinks).  Use video.  Again, test it, but this seems pretty solid across the board.

Opt-in Popups:  This is a tough one to determine.  I’ve found that a popup when people land on the page DOES produce lots of subscribers.  People say it’s annoying, but in truth they sign up to the list more often then not.  That said, I’ve also found that an optin popup tends to reduce the salespage conversion rate.  I think people opt in, close the page, wait for the follow up emails and promptly forget about you.  So, you have to make the call - would you rather get more subscribers or more sales? As a compromise, at 30 Minute Backlinks I’ve removed the pop and have a subscription form on the page itself, should someone need more info before making their buying decision.  This has upped my conversions, and my optin numbers haven’t taken a dive at all.

Testimonials: Pages, for me, have ALWAYS converted better with testimonials.  If you have them, do use them.

Guarantee Graphics: For one site I tested having a “Guarantee” seal type graphic next to the info about the guarantee and it did better then just the guarantee alone.  I’ve only tested this on the one site, so I can’t say with certainty it’ll make a difference for you, but it’s one worth testing, for sure.

TOS/PrivacyPolicy etc.: Sorry, I haven’t tested this one - but in writing this I just reminded myself that I should.  I do “nofollow” these kinds of links.

That ought to get you moving with some ideas for testing new salespage elements and increasing your conversions!

Most of this seems obvious once you think of it, but I have a question about testimonials.
How do you get them when you haven’t sold anything yet?

Following on what Steve said is it considered unethical to make up testimonials.

If you are selling IM stuff, it’s easy to get testimonials. Fellow marketers would gladly give a testimonial for a copy of your product and a backlink from your site. But when you’re dealing in a niche, it’s not so easy. I’ve tried giving a few copies away in exchange for a testimonial, but then I never get it.

Hello,

This was very useful - and together with the other tips from your latest email (Hyperlink maker - downloaded, Icon Buffet - signed up, Justin.tv - watching now!) - has been one of the best, most diverse things in my inbox the past couple of months.
Thank you.

As Doug said it’s unethical to put testimonials which are made up. Now If you are really and haven’t sold anything yet then you might request some of the top marketers to review your product. Ask them what they think about your product. If they can give you something positive then you are done, even two such positive comments would do. Of course not everyone would agree but if you persist you can find someone. Please remember this is just my suggestion and not a recommendation.

thank you
