Steal This Niche: I’m So Tired (Of Manual Keyword Research)

by Michelle MacPhearson

This entry is part 1 of 1 in the series Steal This Niche

Rather than start with an affiliate product and see if there are potential keywords to build a site around, in this episode of Steal This Niche my insomnia and late-night infomercial watching gave me a great niche idea I just had to share with you.

We uncover a profitable niche, with high traffic and low competition… But what’s even more exciting (to me at least!) is that this particular topic is being covered on TV, right now – which means that those search numbers may well grow over time as more and more people learn about the topic and go to Google to find more information.

Watch the video to learn what this niche is, and what the profitable keywords are in it!

As always, we use Market Samurai to find these little gem keywords quickly and easily.  To learn how to build and promote a site around this keyword (or any other niche you’re interested in) visit Crowd Mountain.

Great idea to jump from the TV right into the keyword tools. You can get amazing amounts of traffic doing so at times, in fact much more then you might expect when doing your keyword research.

I remember once running some ads on the word “Americas Next Top Model” on a day when the show was running. Woke up with about 900 opt ins! Unfortunately I don't think we turned a profit on it though :(

But I was amazed at the flood of traffic because of the tv show being on at the time.

I've been really learning a lot by checking out Market Samurai, and stoked that I've taken the time to learn it better.

Great video Michelle, i jumped up and bought the domain http://www.adrenalinefatigue.com :)

Hmmm, now to get my people on something!

MichelleMacPhearson August 17, 2009 at 11:10 am

Awesome Jason! I really wanted to keep this one to myself, actually, LOL – it's a really great niche with the infomercials and all, good traffic #'s, great long tail KW's…

TheSpotter August 17, 2009 at 11:13 am

Thanks Michelle, as always you are giving more then most selling :-)

Longover August 17, 2009 at 11:27 am

Awesome video. I love to see how you dig into niches with MS. Btw, I ended up purchasing Market Samurai after you recommended it awhile back with a similar video.

Thanks Michelle great niche will have to take a look at this market. By the way you are so pretty :)

Very good video Michelle…

However, I would have chosen one of the other ones as the main focus, because while PR and domain age can't be beaten so easily, backlinks may, if they're still in range of thousands.

LOL
But you should know better, eh?…

'Stealing' traffic from TV or any other trends (see Google trends, too) is always paying quickly.

MichelleMacPhearson August 17, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Keep in mind that this video is for a general audience – you may be able to beat a site with 3k backlinks to the page, but many folks can't (yet). We're looking at low hanging fruit.

Wow, great tip.

Hey Michelle,

This is a great tool as keyword research is vital to my article marketing biz. I'm all over it! Great video by the way — I've got to learn how to use the ideas that sometimes pop up watching infomercials — I'm just so dead a#$! tired:-)

Hi
Thanks for the info.
What does it mean when a site has a domain age of – in Market Samurai. (no number at all in the box)
I see that fairly often?
Also, I have seen keywords with a SEOC of 300.000 and SEOT of 800, is that a good or bad keyword?

Nate_Alexander August 17, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Great video Michelle!

I used MS to research my main keywords, but after watching this video alone, see holes in my research. I may have to (sigh) go back and revise things a bit. Totally missed the broad/phrase filter. TOTALLY!

I haven't read your blog for some time, but I think I'm BACK! Thank you!

MichelleMacPhearson August 17, 2009 at 4:09 pm

A – for domain age means that the info was unavailable, sometimes hitting “Analyze” again will bring it up.

An SEOC of 300,000 is much too high – I shoot for under 100,000 as explained in the video.

this is great Michelle!
One of the great things about infomercials and TV ads is that they arnt cheap.
so if their making money – then it must be a profitable niche!

MichelleMacPhearson August 17, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Very good point Chris!

I love watching the speed at which you evaluate a niche as well as your Market Samurai analysis!

Another possible source of niches is the spam that almost all of us receive on a daily basis. That spam, like infomercials, implies there is money to be made.

SEO VaultBoss August 18, 2009 at 7:31 am

He, he, Jason…

Great move!
It didn't occurred to me that Michelle didn't do that prior to releasing the video. Or maybe she picked another one.

Anyway, you did a great job on being so fast after all.

Michelle Great post,
I always like you how you uncover niches using MS, have you ever thought of putting togrther a how to use MS for uncovering market niches. I've watch many videos of the use of MS including what you can see in 30dc. your method is differnt than all the rest. I have found your method has been the best to learn to properly use this program. Just a thought.

Michelle,

Thanks for your blog post re Market Samurai. I participated in the 30 Day Challenge last summer and have been utilizing Market Samurai ever since. It is simply an invaluable research tool.

Sara August 25, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Aaaah the new world of affilaite marketing. In my own opinion, I think it is best to jsut sell your own products because that way you can kind of customize them to a potential market. For example, I search to see what are the top ebooks or subjects that people Google about. I then write an ebook on that subjet and sell it for $20! Cha-Ching. It is all about finding your market first, and then finding the product. That can be kind of hard to do when you are advertising someone else's product.

Thank you for the tip on Market Samurai and Crowd Mountain. I found this post very helpful.

Kim December 8, 2009 at 12:59 am

Thanks for this very informative video. As from the comment I made in your other article you can see that I’m new to this thing and eager to learn. I’m just wondering if the MarketSamurai is a free software? Or if not how much should I pay for it? Does it also provide reliable results?

Thanks again in advance!

bernadus January 3, 2010 at 9:44 am

I like the idea to steal it from television or google trend. Is there any other software we can use, beside MarketSamurai?

Alex Wilson July 19, 2010 at 4:43 am

Hi Michelle,
Just love you videos… I’m a learner Market Samurai user (a somewhat slow learner I might add) and I’ve picked up a lot from listening to you ‘thinking out loud’. Very enlightening.

But. I was very disappointed to find that Crowd Mountain is closed. (I didn’t even know about it. I can’t even remember where I saw the invitation to your blog… but I’m glad I did). Is the closure temporary or a done deal?

Looking forward to catching up on you blog,

Kind regards

Alex

@Kim
Market Samurai is awesome software, as you can see from the videos, Take a trip over to http://challenge.co and use the link for a free trial download. Take a stab at the challenge while you’re at it; there’s a lot of great material there for free also!
