I used to spend a lot of time talking on the phone to salesmen, fleet managers and general managers at East Coast car dealerships. Guys in New Jersey, Massachusetts & Pennsylvania.
Now, I’m from California, born and raised, and they do things a bit differently out there on the right side of the US - particularly in the car business.
I worked for a Silicon Valley dot-com startup called Greenlight.com (they were eventually bought out by CarsDirect.com, operations moved to Southern California and we were all laid off). And what Greenlight did was pre-negotiate a great price on a new car for customers, so all they had to do was walk in and sign the paperwork, no hassle, no haggle. It was a great service, and we were able to negotiate great prices for people since we sent the dealerships a lot of business.
My job at Greenlight, and another company I worked for later was to cold-call these dealerships, convince them to sign up with our program, negotiate pricing and send them deals. The Eastern seaboard was my territory.
Sounds pretty easy, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want free leads? Well, it turns out (who knew?) that these guys have been doing business a certain way for about 50 years, and weren’t about to change because of some California internet start-up.
They gave me a run for my money; it was trial by fire. But I was always the type who’d take whatever they threw at me and throw it right back, and they liked that. It was cool, I was pitching some of the top salesmen on the East Coast and I learned so much about direct sales from them. I really loved my job because it was challenging, mentally stimulating and very rewarding.
So I was watching a set of videos yesterday - called “Habits of the Top Internet Marketers” by Todd Brown. I haven’t run across Todd before, but he reminds me a lot of those Jersey car salesmen (and I truly mean that in a complimentary way). He’s very much a tell it like it is, no BS kind of guy. I think anyone can appreciate that.
The videos are a great watch, and Todd’s got a lot of passion for the subject. What he talks about can be applied to anything though, these habits are important wether you want to become a top internet marketer or the #1 baton twirler in the world. Simple principles of success.
Oh, there’s no opt-in required, no money, so go have a look.
