Excellent advice. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we are doing we forget the obvious. We are interacting with real people on the internet, not computers.

It is so refreshing to read your post, and the comments of others as well. I am a firm believer in quality, not quantity. Just today I removed the application for my Twitter updates to post on Facebook. I did this because I really want to grow my busines via Twitter, and meet up with old and new friends via Facebook. I look forward to more of your insights on this topic.

I believe that you must judge for yourself how to "take advantage" of all the social media without tarnishing your own reputation and being, shall we say, "overenthusiastic" in your advertising endeavors :) That doesn't serve anyone, and reminds us of a used car salesman.

My biggest challenge has been to decide what is important for me to use (Myspace, Facebook, even Twitter) and how I approach it, and how consistent I am. I have definitely calmed down from a salesy approach to a more friendly approach, and basically just talk to friends and family (old school friends, church friends, some business friends) on Facebook. I keep it real and enjoy the contact. If I have something more business oriented to say, I will do it elsewhere (MySpace or Twitter) - that seems to work for me, and helps to keep me focused on what's important at the time - relationships.

Great Guest Post! Thank you for the tips. The Dale Carnegie principles from the 1950s hasn't changed, but adapting to all the new mediums is difficult for some. I was staring at my twitter homepage when first set up and thought- "what the heck is this?". I got a headache and left it for a few months. Once I started using it, I forgot basic conversation/meeting people rules and puked on everyone. The problem with learning and failing so that you can succeed on the internet, is that you leave a non-eraseable trail.

@Gail - I strongly believe as people become more and more interested in the idea of "personal brand", your mug shot becomes a logo.

Just like celebrities who seem to "glow" when you happen to spot one, your mug shot must shine!

Many of these concepts are taken from "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. It's funny how many of the anecdotes, written about 100 years ago, still remain relevant in the age of seamless internet communication.

Hi,
I love this post thank you for putting it up. Actually all your post are helpful and informative. I agree with using a mug shot of oneself, it all helps in our selfless promotion of oneself :-), is it selfless or unashameable :-). We are our own brand thats for sure and so we need to be the best at who we are. Have fun. and thanks again

What a great post. Much of this is common sense, but we all need a reminder from time to time - a case of minding our Social Marketing manners?

Michelle,
Your post is quite warming. I have a quote I hold close and dear to my daily goings,
"People won't remember what you say, People won't remember what you do, but people will always remember how you made them feel."
Thank you so kindly for the invite.

Good post from Yisel.
Michelle, it's simple advice that's been out there forever, but many of us don't hear, see, or read it - ever. Guess all one can do is put it out there, again and again. Of course, it works just as well with your next-door neighbour and your customer. Just make them your friends.
